In the other BDSM film in theaters, The Duke Of Burgundy, you won’t find a kinky romance that blurs the line between BDSM and just a fucked up relationship. In fact, the movie has an all-female cast, where its characters live in a sort of utopia for women, studying butterflies by day and engaging in kinky BDSM role-play by night. The other striking difference between the two films: the BDSM in the movie really has nothing at all to do with relationships; it’s just about kinky sex. 
And that’s what the movie gets right—BDSM actually has little to do with one’s relationship: a woman might like to be dominated, humiliated, etc. in bed, but still be very in control in her everyday life. Basically, the characters’ sexual and emotional needs are not conflated; the two are not the same thing, as many BDSM enthusiasts understand well. What the film also gets right is the sexy power play between the women, although if you’re looking for a racy, escapist romance like Fifty Shades, you’re not going to find it in this movie, which is being described as a “lesbian BDSM art film.”
