Americans Are Way Kinkier Than the Rest of the World

You might think that the mega success of Fifty Shades of Grey is mostly to thank for America’s recent love affair with kinky sex, namely BDSM. According to a 2005 survey by Durex, 36 percent of Americans reported using masks, blindfolds, and other BDSM tools during sex. And in the rest of the world, only 20 percent of people said that they engage in BDSM play. But surprisingly, Americans kinky preference for BDSM is nothing new—as in, way before Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey began flogging vanilla sex into submission.
A study from 1953 found that 55 percent of women and 50 percent of men liked to be bitten during sex. And a different study in 1999 found that 65 percent of university students liked to be tied up. These studies show that well before BDSM became the new flavor of the month, it’s been a (hot) thing in many an American bedroom. That’s because practicing BDSM is actually pretty common, especially for us kinky Americans!
These findings make us proud to be an American! Come show your national pride by getting kinky with us!
