Sex Toy Company Uses Memes To Spread The Joys Of Masturbation

Image Source: Flickr.com | User: rccola159May is National Masturbation Month—and we’re all about “feeling yourself!” But we aren’t the only ones: one sex toy company is getting around social media’s rules against sponsored posts for vibrators and other sex tech in a very clever way: meme accounts. Unbound features sex toys and women that are more whimsical and playful than conventionally sexy—in fact, one of its memes features a vibrator that’s shaped like an alien spaceship with the caption: “Houston, we have an orgasm.”

Unbound advertises through meme accounts in a way that not only normalizes sex toys in a humorous, approachable way, but also promotes masturbation as a kind of self care that’s fun. The company partnered with meme accounts as a way to reject anti-sex positivity on social media, and in doing so, found a fan base that could relate to the quirky memes: “Seeing memes and small influencers promote this material makes you feel good about being open about your sexuality,” said one person. By using memes, Unbound gets around Instagram’s draconian rules for images surrounding female pleasure and also finds its way right into the lap of young people.
