The Australian federal government knocked back a push for “porn passports” to look at X-rated content online. The e-Safety Commission recommended trialing a new age verification technology to prevent underage users from accessing porn. Residents who could prove they were of age would be given access to “tokens,” or a “porn passport.”
The federal government turned the proposal down leaving it up to the porn industry to implement ways of vetting its visitors. The government pointed out that porn is legal in Australia and that most Australian adults have accessed it online, with a 2020 survey by the CSIRO finding that 60 percent of adults had viewed porn. The government said: “While industry is taking steps to further develop these technologies … the age assurance market is, at this time, immature (and) a decision to mandate age assurance is not ready to be taken.”
