Anybody who has kinky sex knows the importance of giving consent before engaging in role-playing and rough sex. That’s why members of the kink community are outraged that Eric Schneiderman, in resigning as New York’s attorney general because of alleged violence toward several women, depicted the abuse as “role-playing and other consensual sexual activity.” Since Ronan Farrow co-authored the New Yorker story that first revealed the allegations against Schneiderman, various online communities on social media and blogs devoted to BDSM have explained that any non-negotiated encounter is “ABUSE. End of story.”
Ronan Farrow also spoke to CNN, adding “that this was not role-playing, that this was not ‘Fifty Shades of Grey.’ It wasn’t in a gray area at all.” EJ Dickson, an editor of MensHealth.com wrote “It is one of the very basic tenets of BDSM. Often, sex acts will be negotiated beforehand in the form of contracts, and either way, anyone practicing BDSM responsibly will implement a ‘safe word’ to make it clear if they are uncomfortable with anything happening.” Hey, Schneiderman, don’t drag kinksters down in the mud with you!
