“Sex sells” is the slogan of a newspaper started by sex workers in Colombia. La Esquina, or “The Corner,” has been “flying off the shelves” since it first got started. It’s made by and for sex workers in Bogotá’s red light district, and is both distributed as a regular newspaper and laminated and plastered on the district’s walls for sex workers to read while they wait for clients.
“People think it is really cool,” staff member Lorena Daza told the Guardian. “I thought to myself, ‘Is anybody actually going to read this?’, but they do, and they like it.” The paper is funded by two local non-profits and is mostly produced by transgender sex workers who hope to “start a positive project in the neighborhood.” La Esquina covers a range of topics—everything from gossip and affordable recipes to hard-hitting features on trans issues. Right on, La Esquina!
