Maggie Gyllenhaal fought hard to make sure a female masturbation scene was included in an episode of HBO’s The Deuce. During a roundtable discussion conducted by The Hollywood Reporter featuring Angela Bassett, Claire Foy, Elisabeth Moss, Thandie Newton and Sandra Oh, Maggie Gyllenhaal was asked about her role as a producer on The Deuce. Gyllenhaal shared a story about insisting that a scene in which her character masturbates—and comes—not be cut from the episode.
Since there’s so much “fake orgasming” in the show to demonstrate the performative, transactional nature of being a sex worker, Gyllenhaal said she told “David Simon, the man running our show, ‘I think you need to see a real feminine orgasm in order to show the contrast and to show that these are performative. It will illuminate the misogyny and the performance and all that stuff.’” The scene shows Gyllenhaal’s character having sex with somebody she actually wants to sleep with, but when he doesn’t make her come, she “turns over and makes herself come.” When the scene was cut, Gyllenhaal said she ended up writing “a dissertation by email” to her fellow producers and asking, “Where is the orgasm?” As Sandra Oh said, “That’s fantastic. Such a great win.”
