Many callers are fairly quick, only a few minutes, which is fine, the minutes add up. Sometimes however you get a marathon caller. People will ask, “What was your longest call you ever had?” Personally, it was ten hours and eight minutes. You do get calls once in a while that go that long, and sometimes the caller is not interested in a back and forth conversation, which can be very difficult. They literally want to just be entertained. So you feel like you are doing a one woman monologue with the occasional grunt on the other end of the phone.
This one caller was always only around a five minute man, but one night he went for five hours. He hardly spoke. He was content to listen to me ramble, and ramble I did, about everything from old vacations decades before to the raccoons in the attic. He had been drinking and was drunk, and I honestly did not think he was paying much attention to the many odd and rambling stories I’d related over the five hour call. He continued to call though and even though he went back to his average of five minute calls, even years later he made references to things I’d said during that marathon call. He’d been paying attention to what I’d said.
You can get a sore throat from talking one sided for so many hours, that is a fact. Some callers are genuinely lonely and are lacking ones in their life to communicate with, so it can make you feel good to know you are the highlight in someone’s day. To just be there for them and let them share their troubles with you they have no one else to share them with.
