A new cryptocurrency and porn platform wants to pay you internet money to watch porn—in exchange for your data. Vice Industry Token Inc. offers consumers, content creators, and distributors cryptocurrency that can be spent on content and services from the company and its partners to engage with their adult entertainment platform. But while you are getting paid to jerk off, you are also handing over your data.
Gizmodo explains, “Like many popular cryptocurrencies, VIT is built on an open-source blockchain, which is where tokens are generated and distributed. It is also where each user’s engagement on the platform—watching videos or commenting, for example—is recorded.” According to the company, documenting users’ data lets porn platforms “more accurately identify viewers preferences, allowing them to refine and create better content for viewers.” Since users readily hand over their data on social media sites and apps, this isn’t a unique model. Still, it remains to be seen whether people will want more, ahem, sensitive data—like what they’re getting off to—to be handed over to strangers.
