The FDA approved a new drug to boost low sex drive for women. The medication comes in the form of a shot to the thigh or abdomen, and is only the second FDA-approved drug to enhance women’s sexual desire. The drug will be marketed under the name Vyleesi, and will be used to treat premenopausal women with a hypoactive sexual desire disorder, or a persistent lack of interest in sex.
The pharmaceutical industry has pointed to surveys in recent years that indicate the sexual disorder affects one in 10 women. The approval was based on women’s responses to questionnaires that showed increases in sexual desire and decreases related to stress. While the women didn’t report having more sex, as the drug’s chief medical officer says, “Women are not desiring more sex. They want better sex.”
