Today Niteflirt celebrates and pays homage to the bisexual community. FYI we do 365 days a year, but especially today! Wendy Curry of Maine, Michael Page of Florida, and Gigi Raven Wilbur of Texas are the creators of this pivotal day for the bisexual community and they kicked it off for the first time back in 1999. Wilbur said:
“Ever since the Stonewall rebellion, the gay and lesbian community has grown in strength and visibility. The bisexual community also has grown in strength but in many ways we are still invisible. I too have been conditioned by society to automatically label a couple walking hand in hand as either straight or gay, depending upon the perceived gender of each person.”
The most important thing to remember whether you’re gay, straight, bisexual, or transgender is respect and love. The heart wants what the heart wants, and no one should be singled out, shunned, or disrespected because of their sexual preference. I sincerely hope that every event, festival, and picnic thrown today in celebration of bisexuality today is filled with love, kindness, and successful strides of squashing prejudices and bisexual invisibility of this courageous and amazing community.
I wanted to give a shout out to Berkeley, California to be the first city to properly and officially devote a day to recognizing bisexual back on September 18, 2012! Bravo!! To read more about Celebrate Bisexuality Day click here! I hope everyone has a fun filled day!
