In December 1953, Hugh Hefner released the first issue of Playboy. It featured the infamous Marilyn Monroe, and not surprisingly, the issue quickly sold out. Playboy went on to become the iconic magazine it is today, and to celebrate its 60th anniversary, the Daily Beast compiled 35 of the sexiest covers in the magazine’s history. Here are some of highlights:
- April 1969: Lorna HopperOne of the top-selling issues of all time features Hopper, the sexy girl-next-door type, wearing nothing but a tie and a flirtatious smile. At the time, the photo was considered subversive because it challenged traditional gender roles. Right on!
- July 1970: Joan BaezThe unparalleled folk singer bared all in this racy issue. On the cover, she’s submerged in water, mermaid-blue, and covering just the tops of her perfectly buoyant breasts!
- October 1971: Darine SternShe was the first African American to grace the cover: fully nude, sporting a big afro, luscious legs dangling from a Playboy bunny chair.
- September 1979: Women of the Ivy LeagueThis controversial cover featured several young women from Ivy league schools posing in a faux college newspaper shot.
- March 1980: Bo DerekFollowing her infamous film 10, the sultry Bo Derek graced this issue in a fringe bikini (and very hard nipples). Obviously, it was a top-seller.
- October 1989: Pamela AndersonTwo months after she appeared on a jumbotron in a tight-fitting t-shirt at a Canadian baseball game, Pamela Anderson was on the cover of Playboy. Thus began a long and fruitful career as one of the magazine’s most popular nude models.
- June 1993: Anna Nicole Smith She appeared for the first time in this issue, looking very Marilyn Monroe-esque in a sexy black and white spread. She was then named playmate of the year, and landed a modeling contract with Guess?, and multiple movie roles.
- April 2003: Carmen ElectraShe’s one of the most prominently featured women in Playboy history. She has many covers before this one, but her nude rocker photo here is one of her best—and sexiest.
Happy anniversary, Playboy! Let’s celebrate all those sexy, naked women together—by getting naked together!
