We-Vibe, a line of “smart” vibrators that can be paired with an app for remote-controlled use, is paying out big time after a class action settlement alleging it collected data on users’ sex lives. Though We-Vibe has not admitted to any wrongdoing, the makers have agreed to pay around $3.75 million for tracking customers’ sexual activity without their knowledge. The lawsuit claims that the app “was designed to collect information about how often, and with what settings, the vibrator was used,” according to NPR.
Allegedly, the company collected users’ email addresses and usage data, which they then linked to a partner company remotely. We-Vibe maintains that users “consented to” having their data collected, but the sex toy company is still refunding up to $199 to anyone who bought an app-enabled vibrator, and up to $10,000 to anyone who actually connected it to the app. According to court documents, it’s estimated that 300,000 people bought WeVibes, and about 100,000 of them used the app. Naughty, naughty, peeping sex toy!
